🚀 This Week’s Walmart Hack: Color Swatches Are a Game Changer
You drop your phone at the wrong angle, and your phone case has finally cracked. You notice that your go-to tumbler has one too many dings in it. Your dog chewed up its leash past the point of recognition.
We’ve all been there in one situation or another; it’s time for a replacement. Do I want the red one or the blue one? Stripes or polka dots? Decisions, decisions.
Those of us more experienced online shoppers and sellers remember the days when every color or variant of a product required its own listing. When customers who wanted to compare multiple options when shopping online had to open up a bunch of new browser windows to do so.
Fortunately, those days are in the past now. Color swatches make it easy for Walmart Marketplace customers to see all of the variants you offer on your products at a glance, and to quickly jump from one design to another simply by scrolling over or tapping on the color they want to take a closer look at. This Simple Modern stainless steel tumbler listing offers a great example of how beautiful and eye-catching this feature can be when set up properly:

Color swatches are 100x more effective at showing off your product and driving a customer to click the “Buy” button than regular text is. And the best part? They are SUPER easy to set up!
There are two ways to include color swatches on your Walmart listings: uploading changes in bulk using a flat file, or updating each individual swatch image manually.
If you are interested in uploading in bulk, you can find a tutorial for how to do so by searching Walmart’s help section, Marketplace Learn, for the Full Item Spec Method. This method allows you to use Walmart’s “Spec Sheet” to fill out details and include image links line by line, uploading everything all at once when finished.
Hey, if you LOVE Excel sheets and never screw them up, this may be right up your alley! Personally, I recommend the manual editing technique. It’s very easy and intuitive to use, and you don’t have to worry about troubleshooting an entire bulk upload because you made one little accident… not that I’d know anything about that, I just HEARD it was annoying… 😬
Here’s how to add a color swatch manually in three easy steps:
Access Variant Details: Go to your Catalog in Seller Center and locate any variant item belonging to the group you want to edit. In the "Actions" column, select "Manage variants".
Edit Swatch Image: Under the "Swatch" column for the specific variant, click the thumbnail. You can then choose to "Crop" or "Replace swatch" with a new image imported from a URL or by dragging and dropping a file.
Save Changes: Click the "Save" button to apply the new swatch image to that variant.
And that’s it! Make your way through your product line, and the next time a potential customer is trying to decide what variant they want, you’ll have made comparing the options as easy as pie for them. What flavor pie, you ask? I’ll have to see those flavor swatch previews to decide! 🥧
🔥 Hot Walmart Seller News:
I mentioned Walmart’s Marketplace Learn help section above. Even if you weren’t aware of its name, I’m sure most of you have found your way to this page at some point when searching for answers to your questions! It’s a fantastic resource for sellers with a treasure trove of useful guides and information.
On October 29, Walmart will be hosting a live holiday special at 11 AM PST (2 PM EST) to help sellers gear up for the holiday season. This virtual session will cover new tools, program updates, and holiday-specific strategies.
Sellers will receive tips on how to maximize their fourth-quarter sales and can even register to ask questions that may be selected and answered live on the show!
Even if you are an experienced seller on Walmart, there will likely be something to learn from this event. Hearing directly from Walmart what its points of emphasis and recommendations are for this holiday season could provide us with some great insights to incorporate into our strategies.
Can’t make it to the live broadcast? No problem! Marketplace Learn posts recordings of its live specials in the “Events” section, so you should be able to check out the replay on your own time if you miss it.
